چکیده

Introduction Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that falls into the larger category of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Although many chronic conditions are associated with excessive intake of dietary saturated and trans fatty acids (including obesity, insulin resistance, coronary heart disease, and some forms of cancer), research shows omega-3 fatty acids, including DHA, are essential in the prevention and treatment of numerous diseases. DHA has been shown to be particularly important for fetal brain development, optimal development of motor skills and visual acuity in infants, lipid metabolism in children and adults, and cognitive support in the elderly. In vitro and animal studies also suggest a beneficial role for DHA in certain types of cancer.

Docosahexaenoic acid level of breast milk of iranian women in low fish – consuming and high fish – consuming regions

Objective: Sufficient intakes of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) via breast milk are required for optimizing visual and neural development at early stages of life. Little or no information is available on DHA intakes and levels found in breast milk in Iranian women and surrounding regions. In this study we measure the DHA in the breast milk of lactating Iranian women from low and high – fish-eating ...

In silico Screening and Evaluation of the Anticonvulsant Activity of Docosahexaenoic Acid-Like Molecules in Experimental Models of Seizures

Background: Resistance to antiepileptic drugs as well as intolerability in 20-30% of the patients raises demand for developing new drugs with improved efficacy and safety. Acceptable anticonvulsant activity, good tolerability, and inexpensiveness of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), make it as a good candidate for designing and development of the new anticonvulsant medications. Methods: Ten DHA-based...

Long-Term Effect of Docosahexaenoic Acid Feeding on Lipid Composition and Brain Fatty Acid-Binding Protein Expression in Rats.

Arachidonic (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) brain accretion is essential for brain development. The impact of DHA-rich maternal diets on offspring brain fatty acid composition has previously been studied up to the weanling stage; however, there has been no follow-up at later stages. Here, we examine the impact of DHA-rich maternal and weaning diets on brain fatty acid composition at weaning...

Inhibitory and Dose-dependent effect of intracerebroventricular docosahexaenoic acid on clonic seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole in mice

Introduction: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurologic disorders. Pharmacoresistance and adverse effects of current antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) necessitate development of new drugs and strategies for treatment of epilepsy. Omega 3-Polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3-PUFAs) are safe nutritional supplements that recently considered for treatment of epilepsy. Anticonvulsant effect of docosahexa...

Docosahexaenoic acid and the preterm infant

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a long chain poly-unsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA) that has a role in the cognitive and visual development, as well as in the immune function of newborns. Premature infants are typically deficient in DHA for several reasons, to include fetal accretion of DHA that typically occurs during the third trimester. These premature infants are reliant on enteral sources of D...
